Superfly & a Birthday

January 9th, 2010

So two things.  One, I totally meant to post something yesterday celebrating TD’s one year birthday.  Everyone sing a hearty happy birthday!  One year ago yesterday, I made my first post on this blog regarding the Lucky Star OVA.  Seems like the OVA should be older than that, but I guess my sense of time is warped or something.

Secondly, I wanted to post my new favorite song of the moment- Alright by Superfly.  I’m not exactly sure how to classify Superfly, but I suppose she would best fall under jPop.

So I guess not ALL jPop is garbage.

Crunchyroll’s Winter Lineup & More

January 6th, 2010

Just a few quick notes.  With the addition of Durarara!! to its streaming lineup, Crunchyroll has finally added a series worth watching.  Along side Durarara!! CR is streaming Cobra and Chu Bra, with a few more mystery titles to be announced at a later date.  Cobra looks interesting enough- its always fun to see retro style animation, and the show looks like it could have a good amount of action in it.  Chu Bra on the other hand, looks like complete trash.  Feel free to call me a prude.

I’ve been making my way through the School Rumble dvd set I got for Christmas.  It’s about as funny as I remember it, though the animation looks more dated than I remember.  That’s to be expected however, as the series itself is some five years old.

I’ve also recently downloaded the 12th and 13th episodes for Kimi ni Todoke, and will be checking those out in the next few days.

Christmas List

December 14th, 2009

Well I’ve done all of my shopping for family et al, so now I figure it’s time to look at what I’m gonna get for myself.  It used to be that other people got me stuff that I wanted, now it seems that I’m responsible for getting what I want…for myself.  Funny how times change, not that it’s a bad thing though.  It is really hard to buy things for adults.

Anyway, someone is getting me the first dvd set for Kannagi, so I’ll be getting the second set for myself.  Rather annoying how Bandai split up the 14 episode series into two 7+7 sets but chances are even if they released a season box set, it would cost you the same amount as buying the two mini-sets individually.

After watching the price fluctuate anywhere from $62 to $90 over the course of a few days, I jumped on the School Rumble complete set for $62 or so on Amazon.  Not a bad price considering it has both seasons and the OVA.

To round it all off, I got the first season of Ghost in the Shell.  That cost me about $40 or so which isn’t hateful at all.  They had two versions: one which I’m pretty sure is exactly like my 2nd Gig box set (ie. seven dvd cases inside of a box) and an “Anime Legends” branded box set for a little bit less.  I opted for the first option.  After getting burned on the “Viridian Collection” version of Gunslinger Girl or w/e (essentially, the video quality was crap) I’ve shied away from value price sets.  That said, my “Anime Legends” Cowboy Bebop collection was just fine, though I didn’t buy it until a friend of mine said his copy was more than acceptable in the video quality department.  So who knows, maybe it’s just that you win some and you lose some.

I feel rather weird not buying (or even wanting any games) for Christmas, but at the same time with FF13 and BC2 coming out in March, I’ll be plenty busy then.  In the mean time, I’ll have to get around to finishing the last three levels of Valkyria Chronicles, beating Bioshock (since I’ll want to get BS2 at some point), and completing Fallout 3 and the extra DLC content.  That’s quite a list!

Anyway, I’d ask what you all are getting for the Holidays, but since hardly anyone reads this I won’t expect any feedback.  Those that do read this most likely know me personally, and can email me or even post here if they are so inclined.

Cheers!

Winter Season Outlook (100th Post!)

December 12th, 2009

Took a look at a preview chart for the winter season, and I have to say I’m not very impressed.  Out of the animes listed, I’m really only interested in two: Durarara! and the new Nodame Cantabile season.  That said, the last Nodame season was just OK, so I won’t expect too much out of this one either.

I am a little interested in Hanamaru Kindergarden (if it’s funny), Ookamikakushi, and the Utawarerumono OVA (I have the series, never watched it) but other than that, nothing stands out.  There was, at one point, a new series by the studio/writer who did Bakemonogatari, but that is no longer listed, which makes me sad. EDIT: My bad, I didn’t realize it was an OVA, so I overlooked it.  It’s actually on the side of chartfag’s winter 10 chart.

There was one other series, Qwaser of Stigmata, that looked like it could promise some good action.  I mean, don’t get me wrong, it didn’t look like it was going to be an A list show, but sometimes B/C list action series are fun.  The description looked good (if cliche) until I got to the part where he controls iron (ok thats fine) and gets his power from breast milk.  Really?  Breast Milk?  Doesn’t make for the best action hero.

White Knight Chronicles

December 5th, 2009

So finally, after what seems like forever (I actually totally forgot about this game) White Knight Chronicles will be getting a US release in February.  As much as I was almost drooling for this game a while ago, my enthusiasm has been tapered by average reviews it got in Japan and the fact that FF13 and Bad Company 2 will be released in March.

SK0601

That guy (yes, that’s a dude) is really dedicated.  The girl he likes is a lesbian, so he figures his best chance to get with her is to dress like a girl.  I should also mention it’s not his first time dressing up- his elementary school sister goaded him into it, and he’s so “good” that he models (dressed like a chick) part time.  I guess he deserves props for his refusal to quit.

For the curious, this shot is from the sixth episode of Sasameki Koto.

Sasameki Koto 05 & CR

December 1st, 2009

Started watching this series a few weeks back.  Its not a series that I’d normally watch, but I was attracted by the art style.  So far, it hasn’t really disappointed me.  Sasameki Koto has be really tasteful with its yuri elements, and there hasn’t been any fanservice to speak of.  It has the feel of a nice easy going school drama.

Battlefield Bad Company 2

November 24th, 2009

Although this blog is technically called “Tensai-Desu ON Anime”, it’s directory name is mcb, or modern culture blog.  Given that title, I feel that I should be able to expand its scope beyond that of anime alone, and thus will from time to time make posts unrelated to anime, but related in some way to modern culture.

Not like I have to explain my actions to the few of you who actually read this (spammers not included there)- I own the site afterall =P

When They Cry

November 23rd, 2009

Started to watch When They Cry.  The series actually has a really good mystery vibe to it.  You’re only given a little bit of information at a time, which makes it fun to try to put the pieces together as the plot moves along.

Let’s be honest though- we all know who the killers are.  No way you can get off acting THAT creepy and not be the criminal.  If I were Keiichi (K1) I’d either be getting the hell out of Dodge, or gearing up for one hell of a show-down.  Time to stock up on pepper spray and tasers my man.

For the record, I’ve finished the first two episodes so far.
